There has been a hostelry on the site for eight centuries. The original inn was, apparently, built into the walls of the C12th Orford Castle but is now separated from it by a little lane.

The Crown and Castle has 21 bedrooms and a lively bistro, the Trinity, which serves decent, unpretentious food.

Although we are officially classed as a hotel, we tend to think of ourselves more as a restaurant with rooms, our public space being very limited. Our desire is to offer thoughtful, unstuffy service and to provide a truly relaxing, unstressed atmosphere.

As such we do not take group bookings and are not suitable for guests attending local weddings. We do, however, take a limited number of dogs in five designated garden rooms and children over 8 years old are welcome to stay, too.

The Crown and Castle is open all year round for accommodation, lunch and dinner.

The Crown and Castle has 21 light, stylish bedrooms, including one fabulous two-room suite. All have modern en-suite bathrooms. We are neither a country house hotel in the ruched-curtain, prohibitively expensive sense, nor a boutique hotel where cutting-edge design precludes hospitality – or functionality. Our aim is to offer a relaxing atmosphere with thoughtful, smiling service; interesting food that respects the seasons; and comfortable bedrooms with good beds. Orford itself does the rest.

OUR ROOMS

Divided between the garden, terrace and main house, all the bedrooms have been completely refurbished and are airy and bright. The garden rooms have undergone both external and internal refurbishment over the last three years and are now modestly stylish

They also have the added virtue of each having a semi-private terrace overlooking the garden, many with a great view of the castle. We now have two brand-new terrace rooms as well.

Bathrooms throughout the hotel have been completely modernised and have both baths and power showers – with the exception of our two good house doubles, which have walk-in showers only.

DOGS: we welcome a limited number of well-behaved dogs in five designated Best Garden rooms, a few dogs in the bar, and we have one (bookable) doggie table in the restaurant area. So please be aware of this should you not like them.

CHILDREN: we welcome children of any age in the restaurant at lunchtime and those over 8 years old in the hotel and at dinner time so please be aware of this should you not like them.

CAR PARKING: we are 2 spaces short when we are full so guests may occasionally have to park in the village square or by the castle – please drop off luggage at reception first. Traffic wardens are only in operation once a month or so.
