About Newmarket Races - The Home of British Racing

The Rowley Mile

The spring and autumn months at Newmarket mean world class racing on the Rowley Mile, the "Course of Champions", which also operates as one of the East of England’s most successful Conference & Events venues throughout the year.

16 racedays - Seven during April and May and nine during September and October (some years stretching into early November) - are run on the most historic stretch of turf in the entire world of sport, where equine champions have been crowned for centuries.

The Rowley Mile offers the ultimate flat racing experience. While every cricket fan wants to go to Lord’s, every football fan to Wembley and every tennis fan to Wimbledon, so every flat racing fan should go to Newmarket’s Rowley Mile racecourse at least once in their life.

The modern and imposing Rowley Mile boasts world class facilities as well as world class racing. Today’s course is identified by the magnificent Millennium Grandstand, opened by the Queen in 2000. It dominates the skyline, a far cry from the facilities that would have existed in the 17th century when Charles II used to watch the races from the famous Bushes, which still exist today about a furlong and a half from the winning post.

Glittering highlights include The QIPCO Guineas Festival on the first weekend in May, the Cambridgeshire Meeting at the end of September, and Dubai Future Champions Day in early October.

Everyone is welcome at the Rowley Mile - many of the weekend racedays make for great family outings, with the free children’s playground in full swing and added entertainments often arranged - and we hope that you will have the opportunity to come here soon to enjoy the most authentic racing experience in the world and sample the magic of the Home of Racing.

The July Course

Summer at Newmarket means the magical romance of the July Course, an oasis of sun dappled lawns, magnificent beech trees, flourishing flowers, thatched roofs, old-style grandstands and sparkling new facilities behind the stands following the £10m redevelopment and expansion of this area which was opened in 2007.

The romance of the surroundings creates a garden party atmosphere unlike any other racecourse, making it a summer favourite with so many people.

While the Rowley Mile is dramatic and imposing, which befits the exceptional quality of its world class race programme, the July Course is more rustic and intimate, ideal for its blend of racing, music, fashion and family entertainment.

It still has its world class racing feature, The Piper Heidsieck July Festival in early July, when fabulous fashion combines with an exceptional race programme to create the East of England’s answer to Royal Ascot.

But it also has the world famous Adnams Newmarket Nights, Britain's most successful music race nights featuring a high profile, open air concert after racing, Summer Saturday's Live, when an afternoon's racing is combined with an early evening concert and fantastic Summer Saturdays when free attractions for children combine with the racing to make them one of the best value family outings in the country (under 18’s, as with the majority of Newmarket’s racedays, are admitted FREE).

There’s so much to look forward to during a long, hot summer at the Home of Racing! Everyone is welcome at the July Course and we hope that you will be captivated by the charm and romance of this most beautiful of racecourses.
