About Baylham House Rare Breeds Farm

Baylham House Rare Breeds Farm is in the middle of the beautiful county of Suffolk in Eastern England and is a small livestock farm breeding farm animals that were once common but are now very rare.

The main area of the farm is wheel-chair and push chair friendly and a disabled toilet and baby changing facilities are available in the Visitor's Centre.

Baylham House Farm consists of about fifty acres adjacent to the house and a considerable amount of extra grazing available to us, scattered round the local area. Not all the land round the house is open to the public as there are woods and wilderness areas which provide food and shelter for wild life and we have a ten acre lake which is stocked and fished by a private fishing club.

The animal paddocks are interwoven with a network of paths which enable visitors to meet all the animals, walk along the shady riverbank path or a stretch beside the lake. We have plans to open up a nature trail through one of the wooded wilderness areas and the lakeside. We have an outdoor picnic area and also some outside picnic tables under cover.

he Café has earned a reputation for providing delicious home made food at reasonable prices.

There are usually two varieties of home made soup available which are served with butter and a home made bread roll.

A ploughman's lunch is always available with either ham or a choice of three different British cheeses, and served with home baked bread, salad, pickle and chutney.

Rolls filled with cheese, local Suffolk ham, or tuna mayonnaise are always on offer and on holiday weekends we usually offer a special such as bacon, local sausage, or roast pork all served in a home baked roll.

For later in the afternoon we provide a wide choice of home made cakes and also clotted cream teas with scones and strawberry jam.

To quench a thirst we have a choice of several varieties of teas, coffees, hot chocolate, cold drinks and ice creams.

Our bread and cakes make use of flour sourced from Pakenham watermill and Garboldisham Mill . All our hot drinks are Free Trade.

We offer a "day as a farmer" as a bespoke service, to meet your needs. For instance, it can be a fun day, mucking in with the farm staff, trying a little of everything, or it can be more structured . For instance, if you want to learn about pigs, the day will be spent with the pigs; feeding, cleaning, learning about pig management, breeding etc.

The "day" can be given as a gift, with an invitation and presentation pack. Costs start at £75 but vary according to content.

It is not commercialised as a children's entertainment facility. The public is invited to come and visit the farm, not as a commercial tourist attraction but as a working livestock farm. Visitors, both adults and children, are provided with advice and information to improve their knowledge of livestock, livestock farming and the need to care for the countryside and the natural environment. Specific educational programmes are provided for visiting schools.

Countryside and animal lovers of all ages can have a wonderful day out.
